Although the fuse is long, it appears that the nuclear option is threatening to go off sometime next week. As more and more GOP Senators get in line behind the lies, the chance of avoiding a Constitutional crisis dims. As many, many folks have noted -- here, on the Senate floor, and even in the mainstream media -- this is serious business. This is not simply about a few judges. Or even the SCOTUS. This is about the ability of those who oppose this radical administration to stop them from simply running roughshod over American democracy.
Since the options on the Senate floor are rapidly dwindling, I think the time has come to begin discussing some sort of massive, nonviolent civil disobedience.
Before this diary slips into oblivion, I want to stress that I am entirely serious. Direct action works. If you need proof, look no further than what the GOP pulled off in the middle of the Florida recount in 2000.
The most obvious thing to do is to get tens (hundreds?) of thousands of people to descend on Washington, D.C. The gab fest in the Senate gives us a few days. I believe we can get thousands of folks from around the country onto the Mall next Tuesday or Wednesday if we start organizing now.
This is a revolutionary moment. If the American people do not show up to defend our Constitution, we will deserve to lose it.
Of course, I've never organized anything remotely like this myself. But my guess is that there are those in the dKos community who have. So I'm really throwing this idea out there in the hopes that someone more qualified than me will pick it up and run with it. If you build it, however, I will come.
